GUJRAT: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday said that the Parliament and provincial assemblies have rejected Supreme Court of Pakistan’s Elections Act 2017 verdict.
Announcing its decision in a case regarding the Elections Act 2017, the SC had stated that a person disqualified under Article 62, 63 of the Constitution cannot hold party office. As a result of the verdict, all decisions made by Nawaz as party president including the nomination of candidates for the Senate elections were invalidated.
Speaking to a rally in Gujrat, Nawaz said that the SC had deprived Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidates to contest elections under the party banner, but the assemblies and the Parliament have rejected the decision. He also congratulated party leaders for securing seats in Senate.
Taking further jibes at the SC, the former PM said that party candidates were ‘forced’ to contest Senate elections as independent candidates because their documents had his signature on them. “Pakistan became a Nuclear power due to my signature. When are they going to term it null and void?” he added.
Referring to the attendees, Nawaz urged the party faithful to not just vote for PML-N during the general elections, but ‘bring a revolution within the country’. He added that the five-judge bench of SC ‘crushed under its feet’ the sanctity of public vote in the apex court’s Panama verdict.
The former PM’s daughter, Maryam Nawaz also took to the stage to congratulate and laud party supporters for standing by PML-N ‘at all times’. She added that the people of Pakistan have dismissed SC’s Panama verdict in Lodhran by-polls and in the recent Senate elections.
